The Project

Problem

In 2016, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) outlined the immediate need for a focus on police officer safety and wellness. According to statistics producewd in the 21st Century Policing Initiative, police office fatalities are 3 to 5 times higher than the average work force population. Policing is a 24/7 business in which officers face a diverse amount of adversity ranging from stress, sleep deprivation, and other occupation risks such as motor vehicle crashes and firearms related incidents.

Assignment Objectives

The focus of this project is to create an Officer Wellness Program designed to address and combat the occupational hazards officers face. This program should have multiple components to include mental and physical health initiatives. The program should privde plans, progams, events, written materials, and other resources for officers to be able to freely access.

Assignment Instructions

1. Research

  1. Conduct a Literature Review of the current physical and mental health hazards affecting officers.
  2. Review other wellness programs and informaiton to combat occupational hazards.
  3. Identify key areas of focus for a wellness program.

2. Program Development

  1. Design a program to address the key areas of focus including meal plans, workouts, mental health programs, etc. The program should illustrate the hazards of the profession and which areas of the program can combat those hazards.
  2. Provide literature, events, meetings, and gatherings that officers can attend as a part of the wellness program.
  3. The programs should be pitched to officers in a manner that creates buy-in.
