The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program generates reliable statistics for use in law enforcement. It also provides information for students of criminal justice, researchers, the media, and the public. The program has been providing crime statistics since 1930.

This page provides information regarding federal law enforcement officers who were killed or assaulted in the line of duty in 2019 and who met the appropriate criteria.

Through the Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) Data Collection, the FBI provides data and training that helps keep law enforcement officers safe as they protect the nation’s communities. The goal is to provide relevant, high quality, potentially lifesaving information to law enforcement agencies focusing on why an incident occurred, as opposed to what occurred during the incident, with the hope of preventing future incidents.

The Law Enforcement Suicide Data Collection (LESDC) Act aims to help agencies better understand and prevent suicides among current and former law enforcement officers, corrections employees, 911 operators, judges, and prosecutors.

Illegal drug use by police officers is a concern in many jurisdictions. The Police Integrity Commission, an independent oversight agency in New South Wales, Australia, conducted a large-scale project on the use of illegal drugs by some NSW police officers. This project, codenamed Operation Abelia, sought to provide a better understanding of the nature of the problem of officer illegal drug use and to identify what can be done to minimise such illegal drug use.

There were 108 fatal work injuries to police officers in 2018, a nearly 14 percent increase from the 95 reported in 2017. Fatal work injuries to police officers occurred at a rate of 13.7 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers in 2018; the rate for all occupations was 3.5. Similarly, police officers incurred nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work at a rate of 371.4 per 10,000 FTE workers in 2018; the rate for all occupations was 98.4.

The Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act of 2017 (LEMHWA) was signed into law in January 2018, recognizing that law enforcement agencies need and deserve support in their ongoing efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of their employees. Good mental and psychological health is just as essential as good physical health for law enforcement officers to be effective in keeping our country and our communities safe from crime and violence.

The nature of police work may at times involve stressful situations such as the threat of, and actual, physical harm and witnessing the human toll of violence. The stress of the job combined with organizational stressors may severely impact police officers and their work. Stress can lead to substance misuse and disorders, trauma, and suicide. Police departments can address officer stress through interventions, such as counseling, peer support groups, and stress management training. This article summarizes literature on the effects of police officer stress and trauma. Police officers that embrace active coping styles may be better able to handle stress.
