In 2022, Mahsa Amini was killed in Tehran after being arrested by the Iranian morality police. At great personal risk, activists were able to get photos of her in a coma before her death to the wider public, instigating immediate protests at the hospital where Amini was dying.
Iranian police denied beating Amini, but claimed she had suffered from a heart attack. However, videos of other instances of physical abuse against women by the morality police spread quickly online, fueling further anger at the state.
