Records in library databases are comprised of fields containing specific pieces of bibliographic information. Common fields include:
For example, here is the breakdown of these fields for this article:
You can search using fields by navigating to "Advanced Search". This is typically located right next to the search bar within a database.
Now, you have the option to specify the field you want to search using the dropdown menu.
For example, maybe I want to only find articles that were published in the Journal of Nutrition Education & Behavior.
If I just search for this in the basic box, it will give me any results that include the words journal, nutrition, education, and behavior. This is not helpful, as it does not narrow the results down to this journal.
By using the advanced search, I can specify that I want to search for "Journal of Nutrition Education & Behavior" under the field Journal Name. This means all results will be from that journal, regardless of the article title or author name.
If I want to get even more specific, I can search for articles in this journal that include "sugar" in the title.
This narrowed my search results from 6,313 total articles in the specific journal, to 53 that are about sugar. Now, I don't have to search through pages of results to find a relevant article for my paper.
