Using the Library and Learning Commons from off Campus: Resources for Faculty

We're here to educate students with sensory disabilities, along with their parents and teachers. Our major network-produced, educational content is carefully customized to serve the needs of K-12 students, as well as adult students studying to meet the needs of blind and deaf students.

*NOTE: Recording time has increased to 10 minutes. Flipgrid is a free video discussion platform from Microsoft that helps educators see and hear from every student in class and foster a fun and supportive social learning environment. In Flipgrid, educators post discussion prompts and students respond with short videos, whether they are learning in class or at home.

Google Voice provides a U.S. telephone number, chosen by the user from available numbers in selected area codes, free of charge to each user account. Calls to this number are forwarded to telephone numbers that each user must configure in the account web portal. Multiple destinations may be specified that ring simultaneously for incoming calls. Service establishment requires a United States telephone number. A user may answer and receive calls on any of the ringing phones as configured in the web portal. During a received call the user may switch between the configured telephones.

Sign-up is free. You are allowed up to 3 padlets on your wall.

The Remind App is a great way to text students without sharing phone number, text your whole class, etc. As they have difficulty accessing parts of blackboard, etc. you can text back and forth (voice messages, too!)

You can download this to your computer/laptop. It is free and will record up to 15 minutes.

Cisco is offering a free version of its Webex videoconferencing software right now. What is nice about Webex is that its super thin and minimal software will be downloaded on to your system. Once setup, it will provide you with a personal room for your use.

Desmos uses devices to connect students, not to isolate them. Students see their classmates' thinking. They ask each other questions and create challenges for each other.

In an effort to support students as they transition to distance education, F.A. Davis has granted students free access to open resources on FADavis.com. This will allow students who don’t have Access Codes to make use of all relevant resources by following the steps below. Please feel free to share this information with your students:

Log in to FADavis.com (or create an account using your school email address)
Navigate to a specific book or product listed on the Occupational Therapy Assistant page
Click on the book or product cover or title.
Click RESOURCES and select the “Open Access” tab to view all available resources
If there is no “Open Access” tab, that means there are no additional resources for this particular book/product.

A single interface where faculty can easily discover and access Open Educational Resources (OER), as well as find and request access to unrestricted, DRM-free e-books from top academic publishers.

JSTORcan be used through the Boston Public Library. Get an eCard. Have students get an eCard..takes less than 2 minutes to sign up and then they can access this database.

To address our unprecedented global and immediate need for access to reading and research materials, as of today, March 24, 2020, the Internet Archive will suspend waitlists for the 1.4 million (and growing) books in our lending library by creating a National Emergency Library to serve the nation’s displaced learners. This suspension will run through June 30, 2020, or the end of the US national emergency, whichever is later.
