Long Description for Keywords vs. Subject Headings Infographic

Keywords:

  • "Natural Language" terms- the words you come up with.
  • Good to start with when exploring your topic and deciding your focus.
  • Database will search for keywords in every area of the text (title, body, author, etc.), which may give you too many results that don't fit what you're looking for.
  • example: heart attack

Subject Headings:

  • Also called "index terms" or "controlled vocabulary".
  • Specific words that experts have agreed upon to identify an item or idea.
  • This makes sure you will see all information related to that subject, rather than a combination of the words "heart" and "attack".
  • example: myocardial infarction
