ENG256: American Literature Post Civil War to Present (Geary): Home

Welcome to the Research Guide for ENG256, American Literature Post Civil War to Present.  Please use this guide to find resources for your analysis of literature criticism.  Please contact myself or any BCC Librarian if you have any questions.

While this page is organized by the novels you have read in class, most of the resources are the same. I've listed resources where you can be sure to locate criticism as well as background information.

What is literature criticism?

According to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, traditional academic literary criticism has historically been works that focus on the influence of major authors.  By tracking works in this way, critics were able to track the cannon of major writers and examine the historical context of the text.  However, criticism has evolved to focus on many different angles and lenses through which a text can be understood.  Read more by checking out this page on literary criticism.
