Before Help Arrives
This program demonstrates how to respond to an emergency. Topics include the use of gloves and other barriers to prevent disease transmission; checking circulation and breathing; controlling bleeding and managing shock; dealing with spinal injuries; identifying broken bones and poisoning; responding to a heart attack, seizures, asthma attacks, and diabetic emergencies; and treating burns, eye eye injuries, insect stings and bites, and heat and cold related injuries. (24 min.)

Electronic Health Records
Whether they are needed to ensure properly dispensed prescriptions, monitor a patient’s recovery, or make an urgently needed diagnosis, accurate health records are crucial to a patient’s safety. This program highlights the important work of health information technicians and shows how electronic health records can help make medical care both safer and more efficient. In-depth commentary on medical information technology and its challenges comes from Dr. David Bates, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Don Detmer, professor of medical education at the University of Virginia. Both are leading experts in medical informatics. (28 minutes)

Hazard Communication for the Medical Office
This program helps train health care staff in the proper use, storage, and organization of hazardous chemicals and other potentially lethal materials. Separating bodily risks (flammables and explosives) from chronic health risks (chemicals that can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed), the video describes substances—from germicidal agents to packaging materials to photographic chemicals—that pose serious threats. (22 min.)

Health Information Management
Compiling and retrieving up-to-date information on patients’ illnesses, injuries, and medical history is more important than ever for effective medical care. This video focuses on opportunities in the field of health care information management and technology. Examples of HIM-related positions are covered—including medical billing specialist, diagnostic and procedural coder, and privacy officer—along with the two main types of schooling that precede a HIM career: an associate degree leading to work as a Registered Health Information Technician, and a baccalaureate degree required for employment as a Registered Record Administrator. Patient confidentiality is an important subject in the video. A viewable/printable instructor’s guide is available online. A Meridian Production. (15 minutes)

Medical Assistant
Many young people are interested in entry-level health care jobs that balance clinical duties with administrative functions. This program illustrates the ins and outs of just such a position—the certified medical assistant. The video examines a CMA’s typical responsibilities, such as maintaining patient records, managing a physician’s schedule, and preparing examining rooms, as well as the skills a successful medical assistant will need—including data entry, customer service, specimen collection, and first aid. Incorporating interviews with experienced medical assistants and the specialists who train them, the program describes what it takes to become a CMA, from the best high school courses to take to passing the CMA (AAMA) certification exam. A viewable/printable instructor’s guide containing additional material—including student activities, discussion questions, vocabulary terms, and fast facts—is available online. Correlates to national and state board certification standards. A Meridian Production. (20 minutes)

Reinventing Healthcare - A Fred Friendly Seminar
Can the U.S. afford to reform its health care system? Can it afford not to, with 46 million Americans lacking health insurance and millions more underinsured? This Fred Friendly Seminar explores the dilemmas and urgently needed policy decisions surrounding what has become, literally, a life-or-death issue. NYU law professor Arthur Miller guides a team of high-profile panelists through a series of hypothetical case studies—focusing on a middle-aged man who must choose between a higher-paying job and adequate health coverage; a woman who avoids seeing a doctor because of high co-pays; and an uninsured woman who, tragically, can’t afford to deal with a serious medical problem. Panelists include William Novelli, CEO of the AARP; Dr. Regina Herzlinger, Harvard Business School professor; David Walker, former U.S. Comptroller General; Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, Vice President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas; Michael Tanner, Cato Institute senior fellow; and Dr. Regina Benjamin, founder of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic. (57 minutes)

What Should I Do? The Basics of First Aid
Knowing what to do until medical assistance arrives is what first aid is all about. This video will prepare viewers to respond safely in emergency situations. Along with CPR and treating for shock, the program shows how to respond to minor injuries such as cuts, burns, sprains, and strains; how to recognize and care for heat and cold injuries; what to do in case of poisoning, bites, or stings; and how to pack a first aid kit with all the essential contents. Taken into consideration in developing the video were the national educational standards and the standards of the National Association for Sport & Physical Education. A Cambridge Educational Production. (28 minutes)
